Last 2 days for vendors who make their stalls their homes

09/11/2010 - CEBU, Philippines – The city government is bent on clearing markets of vendors who have converted their stalls into personal dwellings. Its first target is the Taboan Public Market.

"Wala ko mahadlok ana," said market administrator Raquel Arce, following reports that vendors at Taboan are also bent on fighting back should they be forced to vacate.

At least 20 vendors at the Taboan Public Market are scheduled to be evicted on Monday following a notice issued by Mayor Michael Rama.

Arce said the next targets are units 1 and 2 of the Carbon market.

The other satellite markets in Cebu City are situated in Pardo, T. Padilla, Cogon-Ramos, Lorega-San Miguel, and the Freedom Park and Warwick-Barracks.

Arce said the problem does not exist in T. Padilla, Cogon-Ramos and Pardo because these public markets have "roll up-roll down" entrances, thus, people can't easily go inside.

In a visit to the Taboan public market, some of the vendors told The FREEMAN they are forced to stay at their stalls beyond store hours because they are afraid their goods would be stolen.

"Maayo unta og sabton usab nila ang among sitwasyon." a vendor said.

But Arce explained the intention of City Ordinance 1486 is to ensure cleanliness in public markets in the city, thus, the market administration is compelled to enforce the same.

The existing market code strictly prohibits anyone, including the vendors themselves, from staying at their stalls at night. (FREEMAN)
