09/11/2010 - CEBU, Philippines – Mayors from different municipalities have asked Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia to help them create and or preserve the existing heritage parks in their towns to keep their historical value and generate income by attracting tourists.
Mayors from Dumanjug, Borbon and Alegria want to push for a heritage park in their respective municipalities, seeing its benefit to their constituents and their towns.
In response, Garcia is thankful that mayors paid importance on the historical values of their towns.
"Naibog sila sa Oslob cuartel, which used to be a dumping site and was transformed into a heritage park. And also, they are asking for assistance in transforming a cer-tain area in their respective towns into a heritage park," she said.
The governor pointed out that the province would help enhance and restore heritage houses structures and promised to help put up lighting with the help of the Provin-cial Engineering Office.
"I like this kay maningkamot gyud ang local government aron duna'y ilang counter part, mutabang ta aron magkanindot ang area," she said. The "heritage movement" started when Garcia's term as governor started in 2004.
"They express it karon na sa pag-abot nako nasugdan ang heritage movement kay unta mga 20 years ago pa ni nagsugod daghan na og na-preserve nga old churches which was made of cobble stones," she said, adding that the town of Borbon could have the most number of heritage structures.
On November 27, the governor will lead the inauguration of the so-called "Jacob's Ladder" in Samboan. The Capitol took part in preserving the heritage structure by changing its roof into clay-tile roofing and by providing the lighting in its small coffee shop.
Meanwhile, the Russian delegation headed by the Governor of St. Petersberg, Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko, will be in Cebu on October 20-22 to attend the Philippine-Russian Business Forum, which will be held at the Cebu Interna-tional Convention Center (CICC). A bust of Leo Tolstoy, a Russian novelist will be installed as a symbol of friendship between Cebu and St. Petersberg in Russia.
Cebu has signed a sisterhood agreement with St. Petersberg in 2009 that was witnessed by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who also sealed the sisterhood pact. (FREEMAN)

Cebu City is located on the central eastern part of Cebu Province, an island at the center of the Visayas in Southern Philippines.
