09/10/2010 - CEBU CITY, Philippines – An inmate who escaped from the police station in Carmen, Cebu in 2008 was killed in an alleged shootout with policemen early Friday.
Senior Inspector Ricky Neron, who led the arresting team from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, said they tried to arrest Gelacio Villanueva, who was facing murder charges, at his hideout in Sitio Culo, Barangay Kahumayan in Danao City around 4 a.m., but the fugitive shot at policemen, prompting them to fire back.
Neron said Villanueva was hit on the head and leg.
Villanueva was brought to the Danao District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Neron said they recovered a .45 cal. pistol and a .38 cal. revolver in the fugitive’s possession.
According to police records, Villanueva was charged for the killing of Emeliano Mejares on September 26, 2006. He was detained at the Carmen police station but escaped on March 2008. (Inquirer)
