Bridge widening congests city traffic

05/19/2010 - The first six hours of a rerouting scheme near the Tipolo bridge in MC Briones and G. Lopez-Jaena Streets, Mandaue City created heavy congestion yesterday.
However traffic personnel said vehicular flow eased after lunch for both private and public utility vehicles (PUVs).

Under the rerouting scheme, all vehicles from north have to turn left from the Tipolo Caltex area to MC Briones Street.

This route turned a one-way lane to a two-way lane for vehicles heading north and south, traffic personnel explained.

“Alkansi mi sa among biyahe kay daku kaayo'g kaon sa among oras ilabi na kung ma-trap mi sa trapik kaayo (We are losing money on trips because the traffic eats up a lot of our time),” jeepney driver Alberto Lugwarte said.

Mandaue traffic personnel said they will evaluate if their rerouting scheme is effective or not.

In the meantime, they appealed to the riding public for cooperation in making the scheme work.

"If the traffic worsens especially during peak hours we will change the rerouting for the vehicles to avoid congestion,” Mandaue Traffic Unit chief Dino Bargamento said in Cebuano.

He said another option would be to allow vehicles to pass by P. del Rosario St, Tipolo—an intersection road of Cebu City heading to Mandaue City.

"Drivers need to sacrifice as well,” Bargamento said (Freeman)
