DepEd orders tight security in Cebu schools

02/14/2011 - CEBU CITY, Cebu — The Regional office of the Department of Education (DepEd 7) is urging school administrators and officials of parents, teachers, and community associations (PTCA) to map out additional measures to ensure the safety and security of pupils.

DepEd 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia issued this directive following the alleged abduction and murder of a six-year-old Grade 1 pupil of Calajo-an Elementary School in Minglanilla who was found dead in Barili on Wednesday.

Borgonia also formed a team to conduct a fact-finding investigation on the circumstances behind the kidnapping and murder of Ellah Joy Pique to determine the possible administrative liability of the school officials.

The education officials urged school administrators and PTCA officials to consider hiring security personnel that will ensure the safety of students. He also urged parents to check on their kids in schools to make sure that these pupils will not fall into the hands of criminals.

Wednesday morning last week, a barangay official found the body of Pique wrapped in a white bed sheet in Barangay Guibuangan, Barili town. Three big rocks were also found wrapped with the girl.

Barangay Councilman Junrey Bayno said he found the girl around 7:55 a.m. and immediately reported the matter to the Barili police. A team headed by Police Chief Insp. Marlon Gumabao immediately proceeded to the area to verify the report. (Manila Bulletin)
