Cebu task force destroys firecrackers worth P500K

12/30/2010 - CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – Over half million pesos worth of confiscated firecrackers and pyrotechnics have been destroyed by the members of the Cebu City Task Force Pabuto here.

Market Administrator Racquel Arce, member of the said task force, said that the 10 boxes of firecrackers and pyrotechnics that they destroyed were confiscated during the period from December 23 to 27 for violation of the City Ordinance prohibiting the sale of such goods outside the South Road Properties, which have been designated by the Cebu city government as firecrackers-vending zone in the city.

Arce said the confiscated firecrackers were sold in Carbon Market and Manalili Street. The Task Force Pabuto, which is composed of City Hall personnel, Cebu City Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection, destroyed the firecrackers by pouring water over the whole lot. The members of the task force have been conducting raids against several stores selling firecrackers and pyrotechnics outside the SRP for violation of Cebu City Council Resolution 1394.

Mayor Michael Rama reiterated his call to all firecracker vendors to only display their goods at the designated firecracker zone.

Under Resolution 1394, firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices sold outside such designated zone will be confiscated and destroyed as mandated by City Ordinances 82 and 1962.

The same resolution states that the display, sale and testing of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices shall be done only at the SRP between December and January.

Those who are caught violating the ordinance will be fined P5,000 and will be required to pay the P2,000 permit fee (Manila Bulletin)

  1. Cebu is my hometown but I relocated six years ago. I was able to visit last Christmas and was surprised that there is a designated area in the south. I personally think this is a good idea. What would be an even better idea would be to strengthen the campaign for keeping kids and inexperienced adults from firecrackers. Someone I knew suffered from injuries last Dec 31 and they weren't pleasant to look at.
