11/06/2010- CEBU CITY -- Non-union members and accredited service contractors will ensure there will be no disruption in services should the Visayan Electric Co., Inc. (VECO) Employees Union push through with its strike.
VECO spokesman Ethel T. Natera made the assurance after members of the employees union, which is affialiated with the Associated Labor Unions (ALU), voted to strike over alleged unfair labor practices in the Aboitiz-led utility.
In a statement, Ms. Natera said 156 members of the union voted to strike. But 83 other members either voted against or did not participate in the voting. There are 174 other employees who are not members of the union.
"They, together with our accredited electrical service contractors, are committed to ensure and guarantee that your electric service will not be disrupted," Ms. Natera said.
She said VECO’s full service centers at SM City Cebu and in Bulacao, Talisay City will remain open to provide customer service functions such as applications, inquiries, complaints and payments. VECO has also accredited third-party collection agents and banks to facilitate payments in various locations.
"Our robust distribution system is managed by professional non-union team members who
operate and coordinate the network via a redundant Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system," she added.
The union had filed a strike notice before the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) regional office and conducted a strike vote, the results of which were submitted to the firm’s board on Thursday. The NCMB started a marathon conciliation conference on Friday.
