10/11/2010 - CEBU CITY, Philippines – Two sisters were injured when a portion of their house in Barangay (village) Basak-Pardo in this city collapsed during a heavy downpour shortly before midnight Sunday.
Ed Jean Bertulfo, 16, and her younger sister Eugene, 15, both from Upper Lusimba, Barangay Basak-Pardo, sustained injuries when a portion of the kitchen of their house, perched in a hillside near a subdivision, collapsed after it was hit by a mudslide.
Ed Jean was badly hurt and part of her body could not move, while Eugene only had bruises in the different parts of her body because she managed to run away when the debris fell, according to Barangay Captain Dave Tumulak of Basak-Pardo.
The two sisters were taken to the Cebu City Medical Center by the rescue team headed by Tumulak.
Tumulak said his barangay’s rescue team, Basak Pardo Emergency Response (BPER), composed of paramedics and nurses, arrived in the area at around 11:30 p.m. By then, neighbors had pulled out Ed Jean from the debris.
The attending physician said Ed Jean might have a possible spinal column fracture because she was directly hit by the debris.
Tumulak said that based on the account of Eugene, she and her sister Ed Jean were at the kitchen eating when the mudslide occurred.
It was the second accident caused by the rains on Sunday, as a rescue team from the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council also responded to an alarm at 2 p.m. in Nivel Hills, Lahug, when a portion of Emma Auditor’s house of caved in. However, no one was hurt.
Auditor’s house was located above a World War II tunnel, which reportedly collapsed because of the heavy rains. (Inquirer)
