09/23/2010 - Cebu City-- As cases of dengue continue to surge in Cebu City, the Cebu City Health Office (CCHO) plans to have three health centers in three different barangays operate round-the-clock to ensure that laboratory services for suspected dengue cases can be accommodated immediately.
CCHO Dengue Medical Coordinator Dr. Raymung Ogan in a PIA Kapihan this morning that tackled the rising cases of dengue in Central Visayas said the plan to have a 24-hour lab services in three health centers for dengue tests like Complete Blood Count (CBC) including Platelet and Hematocrit Count will provide early intervention for suspected dengue cases.
The three health centers which are strategically located are in Barangays Talamban, Mabolo and Guadalupe where incidence of dengue cases is high, according to Ogan.
"By the end of the month, we hope to see the lab services in these three health centers operate for 24 hours," Ogan added.
Cebu City has eight satellite laboratory centers that provide dengue tests but these are only open during working hours while the swelling cases of dengue prompted city health officials to open three health centers offering lab services round-the-clock, Ogan disclosed.
"This will also help decongest the city hospital from patients seeking for dengue lab tests," Ogan said.
Cebu City has currently 1,830 dengue cases with 13 deaths since January and tops the region with the highest number of dengue cases, this is learned.
In Central Visayas, there have been 7,241 dengue cases recorded since January until September 18, this year while the figure represented an 18 percent hike since September 18, this is reported.
Ogan cite three primary factors that attributed to the rise in dengue cases in the city. First, is that there is a trend and that every three to four years, dengue incidence in the city usually reached to an epidemic level, Ogan bared.
Secondly, this year has witnessed an abnormal high amount of rainfall and leads to an increase in the breeding places for the Aedes Egypti mosquito, Ogan further said.
The third factor Ogan said is the dense population of the city which logically leads to more victims affected with the dengue virus.
Ogan said city, barangay and health officials are doing their best to address the dengue situation but that the people themselves should have a change of attitude with regards to environmental sanitation as dengue is a preventable disease. (PIA News)
