Rama orders full inventory, housekeeping of motor pool

07/08/2010 - A few minutes into his inspection of City Hall's vehicles, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama didn't like what he saw.

“I am unsatisfied with how things are being set up in the motor pool. The scene is very unpleasant. I have tasked the ERMM (Equipment Repair and Maintenance Management ) chief Gerome Ang to do some housekeeping in the area,” Rama told reporters.

The mayor went to the Cebu City Hall's motor pool at Pond A of the South Road Properties (SRP) to check whether the vehicles are roadworthy.

Yesterday's inspection was scheduled in the wake of last Saturday's Toledo City bus accident.

Engr. Roberto Buntoyan of the ERMM told Rama that the city has 24 Kaohsiung buses in good running condition and five at the repair bay.

Still the mayor ordered the ERMM to submit an inventory of the vehicles in the motor pool to see their condition.

Rama later went to the Sugbu Building grounds to oversee the checkup of vehicles.

The previous night, emergency response vehicles were inspected by mechanics and were evaluated by a visiting team from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

Alvin Santillana, Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council representative, said vehicles from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) were also inspected.

He said the vehicles are checked daily and before every scheduled trip.

Rama said the trucks, multicabs and mini buses of every barangay will also be inspected for any defects.

“The whole process couldn't be completed overnight and so it will go on until the last vehicle will be tested and accounted for,” he said.

Rama reiterated that no Kaohsiung bus will be allowed to travel beyond Metro Cebu except for urgent reasons.

He also said these buses won't be allowed to travel on elevated terrains to avoid accidents similar to the Toledo bus crash that killed 15 people. (Inquirer)
