No water for 10,000 Cebu households

05/23/10 - CEBU CITY, Philippines – Close to 10,000 households in Cebu City are experiencing lack of supply of water. And residents may have to endure this until next month.

The Metro Cebu Water District explained that the water shortage is due to the El Niño phenomenon.

The Buhisan Dam, with its water at the critical level, has been closed for preparations for the rainy season.

Francisca Estrella, a 50-year-old housewife and mother, shared how her family conserves water as the scorching heat continues to dry up Cebu’s water sources.

“Each of us only uses one small pail of water for bathing (Maligo mi pero tag-usa ra kabalde, kay di gyud masigo among tubig),” Estrella said.

Her tasks at home have also become more difficult as she can only do the laundry once a week. She said they also have to recycle water.

Residents of Barangay Apas and Barangay Capitol Site have been lining up at early dawn for 2 months now to get water from a faucet along the road.

“As early as 3 a.m., we line up for water (Kada adlaw na lang mi dinhi alas tres sa kaadlawon mag-sawd daplin sa kalsada),” said resident Violeta Contingjo.

Victor Paulin added: “Barangay officials should do something about this, like have a truck to ration water (Angay unta ang mc o d ba ang mga konsehal sa barangay mo-kuan og truck sa mc mo-request para sa mga tawo).”

Estrella, Contingjo and Paulin, as well as scores of people in Cebu, will have to continue standing in line, recycling and cutting back on water consumption, as the water district said the supply will only normalize by mid-June. (abs-cbnnews)
