Alvin hits admin for SRP party expenses

05/10/2010 - OPPOSITION party Kugi Uswag Sugbu (Kusug) criticized the launching of the South Road Properties (SRP) Saturday night, saying the city’s officials showed a lack of “delicadeza” in using government resources.

Mayoral candidate Alvin Garcia said the funds would have been better spent addressing education or medical services, or real threats like narco-politics.

“What will it be next? We cannot have a mayor whose stand against illegal drugs is shaky and who betrays his own constituency by keeping a public friendship with a felon convicted of violating the old Dangerous Drugs Law,” he said.

Also yesterday, Mayor Tomas Osmeña admitted that Ermita Barangay Captain Felicisimo “Imoc” Rupinta’s support for Garcia will affect the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan’s (BOPK) candidates for north district councilors, but not so much their bets for mayor and vice mayor.

Mayoral candidate Michael Rama said it does not matter to him.

Last Saturday, Rupinta announced his support for Garcia, saying he does not want an alleged drug lord protector to run the city.

“Things like that can occur at the last minute but it will not matter. I’m not sure if it is a well thought-of decision on his part. I am also not sure if he can be considered a true-blooded BOPK because he ran independently,” Rama said.

In a separate statement, Kusug’s public relations officer Jonji Gonzales said the “blatant use of government resources” was seen in the use of government dump trucks and buses to bring people to the SRP.

“Grabe ang hinakutay og tawo (They really rounded up a crowd),” he said.

Nagiel Bañacia, SRP manager, said the barangay buses were used because the people themselves asked for it.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 Director Pedro Noval also said the City Government did not appear to have violated any rules on using government vehicles, because the launch was an official event.

Commission on Audit rules prohibit the use of government vehicles for personal gain. Held along with the SRP launch was a party for supporters of the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (Sun Star)
