Teacher shot dead Cebu classroom

2/10/10 - CEBU CITY, Philippines—A 52-year-old schoolteacher was shot and killed in front of his pupils at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Argao, sending the children scampering in fear.
Romeo Aguirre Duran, a native of Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental and adviser of the Grade VI pupils of Binlod Elementary School in Argao town, 66 kilometers south of Cebu, took one bullet on the left side of his face.
Police Officer 1 Eduardo Semilla of the Argao Police Station said Duran was checking the test papers of his pupils when an unidentified man in shorts, a blue shirt with a scarf and a cap went inside the room and greeted the teacher “good afternoon.”
Duran, who was sitting at his table while checking the test papers, asked what he could do for the man.
The assailant did not reply but instead pulled out a gun, shot the teacher at close range and casually walked toward his male companions who were on a red motorcycle parked outside the school building.
Horrified by what they saw, the pupils scampered in different directions, screaming and crying.
Semilla said the police did not recover any slugs from the scene of the shooting.
He added that they had yet to determine the motive for the killing although investigators were not inclined to believe the killing was related to his work as a teacher.
Semilla said the gunman was said to have a Spiderman tattoo on the neck and another tattoo of a cross on his leg.
Fellow teachers told policemen that Duran had no known enemies. (Inquirer)
