President Arroyo goes diving to see Malapascua sharks

2/23/2010 - MALAPASCUA ISLAND--Following her heavy schedule in other provinces, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday chose to spend the night at a diving-spot on Malapascua Island in the northern Daanbantayan town.
Her first time on the island, Arroyo told reporters in a dinner last night that she would dive and see for herself the world-famous thresher sharks found only in Malapascua.
“This is the only place in the world where there are thresher sharks so the potential is really big (for tourism),” said Arroyo over dinner of seafood.
“We do not need to market this place. Because tourist come in because they know everything about it. It is on the Internet,” she added.
Like her in her usual interaction with the media, Arroyo declined to talk about politics.
Arroyo was welcomed by local officials including Daanbantayan Mayor Sun Shimura and his mother Vice Mayor Maria Luisa Loot as well as Rep. Benhur Salimbangon of Cebu’s 4th district, and sister Bogo mayoral candidate Mariquita Salimbanong-Yeung.
After taking a dive in Malapascua, the President is expected to inaugurate roads and a bridge proposed by Salimbangon. From there, the President goes to Cebu City enroute to Bohol on board a ro-ro vessel.
She was expected to be back to Cebu City for the 73rd Charter Day celebration where she would be conferred with the “Order of Rajah Humabon” during today’s celebration of Cebu City’s 73rd Charter Day.
Nagiel Bañacia, city information and protocol officer, said the President would receive the Order of Rajah Humabon, because of her full support to the South Road Properties.
The Order of Raja Humabon is the highest degree of recognition that Cebu City can give to a certain person.
He said the President had declared three Presidential Proclamations. The first declared Cebu City as the rightful owner of SRP. The second one declared SRP as alienable and disposable while the third gave the city the right to own Kawit Island.
The awarding will be held at Cebu City Sports Center at 6:00 p.m. with a program which will culminate in a Sinulog-like finale. (Cebu Daily News)
