Dumpit denies involvement in vigilante-style killings

2/4/10 - CEBU, Philippines - Controversial policeman SPO1 Adonis Dumpit has denied accusations that he is one of the alleged “vigilantes” operating in the city who had already killed more than a hundred suspected criminals since five years ago.
In an interview at his detention cell at the office of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG-7), Dumpit said he had always observed the rule of law by giving due process to suspected felons.
The police officer said that in the Philippine National Police organization, police would arrest suspects and bring them to the bar of justice.
“Wa gyud na sa among organization (PNP). Kung makasala ka unya madakpan, dad-on gyud ka sa hukmanan para tagaan og due process,” Dumpit said.
Though police would always ran after the criminals, he explained that suspected criminals should be given a chance to answer charges against them and be given equal treatment as stipulated in the law.
Dumpit, who is facing murder charges for the death of a 17-year-old suspected robber four years ago, is presently detained at the CIDG-7 detention cell after the court granted his motion to be detained there instead of the Cebu City Jail where most of the criminals he had arrested are incarcerated.
Meanwhile, Chief Supt. Lani-O Nerez, director of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7) also denied that Dumpit was one of the alleged vigilantes.
Nerez said he can’t afford to let his men short cut the law and everybody should be given due process.
From 2004 until 2007, more than 150 suspected criminals were already killed by alleged vigilantes. Most of the gunmen were riding motorcycles and not even single suspect was arrested.
Dumpit surrendered last Monday to face the murder charges and clear the names of his superiors in connection with the killing of suspected robber Ron-ron Go, who was still 17 years old when the incident happened.
While inside the CIDG-7 stockade, Dumpit’s colleagues in service assigned at Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) had continued to flock his detention cell to show their support to him.
