Three Japanese nationals were rescued together with nine other passengers and crew when their motorized boat capsized in the vicinity of Camotes Island in Cebu, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Tuesday.
In a report, the NDCC said the Japanese tourists, together with four other Filipino nationals and five crew members, were on an island hopping trip on board the passenger outrigger boat M/B World Big 4.
The vessel left Punta Engaflo, Mactan Island, Cebu at 11 a.m. Monday.
At around 4 p.m., the Philippine Coast Guard stationed in Camotes Island received a distress call saying that M/B World Big 4 has capsized in the vicinity of Sitio Puenobellic, South Poblacion, San Francisco, Camotes, Cebu due to strong winds and rough seas, the NDCC said.
All passengers were rescued by a fishing boat owned by a certain Mr. Suringa and were brought to Santiago Beach Resort for treatment of minor injuries, the NDCC said.
The three Japanese were Identified as Takizmiya Lima, 67, Michiyo Nishimura, 20, and Shuich Asada, 55.
With them are Shayne Mia Narisma, 23, Geraldin Tampus, 24, Francis Dexter Orjales, 36, Juliet Gumapac, 36, and Fulvio Quizo, 57. The four remaining male crew members were unidentified.
The victims have beet taken back to Cebu on board M/V Golden Express which departed from Camotes at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the NDCC said.
The inclement weather in the area was due to the southwest monsoon.
Meanwhile, in its weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said expects the southwest monsoon to bring rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
The rest of the country will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. (Inquirer)
