Spokesperson: Erap being ‘civil’ with Arroyo at Cebu wedding

Former President Joseph “Erap" Estrada was just being “civil" with President Gloria Arroyo when he shook her hands at a wedding in Cebu City last Saturday, a spokesperson of the Erap camp said Sunday.

In a text message to GMANews.TV, Estrada’s spokesperson Margaux Salcedo said “President Estrada was only being polite as a gentleman that is why he shook Mrs. Arroyo’s hand."

Earlier in the day, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said in an interview on dzBB radio “medyo amused ang mga Cebuanong nanonood sa kanila, maganda ang nangyayari (Cebuanos who saw what happened were amused. This is a good development)."

But Salcedo said what happened at the wedding “...does not change his [Erap's] opinion of her [Arroyo], adding, "Although he has forgiven all those who conspired against him [in 2001], including Arroyo, he has not forgotten the injustice done to the Filipino people."

According to Salcedo: “In our eyes, she remains an illegitimate president who is insensitive to the needs of the Filipino people. We remain eager to see her step down in 2010 and justice served to the Filipino people when a new administration takes over."

President Arroyo and the former president were principal sponsors at the wedding of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia’s daughter.

Arroyo was swept to the presidency after a people’s uprising ousted Estrada in 2001.

Erap, a staunch critic of the Arroyo administration, plans to run for the presidency in 2010. (GMANews)
