Cebu province commends GSIS for educational scholarship grants

August 27, 2009 Cebu City- For giving importance to education by offering educational assistance to its members and pensioners, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) received a commendation from the Cebu Provincial Government through a resolution authored by Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Juan V. Bolo.

SP Resolution No. 3278-2008 recognizes the efforts of the GSIS to bring more benefits to its members and pensioners, particularly scholarship programs through the GSIS-STI (Systems Technology Institute) grants, a tie-up with the Information Communications Technology (ICT) and ICT-enhanced education provider STI.

With the tie-up called GSIS-STI Grants, qualified relatives of GSIS member or pensioner, who are incoming freshmen this school-year, will enjoy a 20 percent scholarship grant in tuition and laboratory fees if they enroll in any STI campus nationwide.

GSIS members can avail of the same benefit.

"Resolved to commend, as it is here commended, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for entering into a contract with STI for a partial scholarship project that would benefit GSIS members and pensioners," the commendation stated.

Such efforts are also in line with the directive of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to make schooling more affordable for all Filipinos.

To avail of the partial scholarship grant, GSIS members and qualified relatives need to present to STI the GSIS eCard Plus, subject to verification.

The eCard Plus, a pioneer service introduced by the GSIS, is a multi-purpose utility card issued to all of its members and pensioners to improve the facilitation of loans, pension, and claims proceeds. The card serves as an identification, ATM, debit, and discount card. It also serves as a savings account at Union Bank, among others.

GSIS members and qualified relatives can continue to benefit from the 20 percent scholarship grant in the succeeding semesters until they have graduated from their chosen field, provided that they continue to meet the required standards and qualifications of the STI Scholarship Guidelines. STI scholars are required to maintain a General Weighted Average (GWA) of at least 2.25 or its equivalent of 83 percent to 85 percent with no grades lower than 2.5.

In addition, scholars should not obtain a failing grade or absence without official leave (AWOL) in any subject; must not be dismissed, warned or held on probation due to scholastic delinquency; should not have any disciplinary offense, and must take a full load course for each semester as prescribed in the STI curriculum, excluding the National Service Training Program.

Apart from the partial scholarship grant, STI also committed to procure the assistance of Global Resource for Outsourced Workers, Inc. (GROW), which in turn will provide assistance in securing employment for members and qualified relatives of GSIS who have successfully graduated from their courses in their chosen STI schools.

GROW, a POEA-licensed placement company, is a member of the STI Education Services Group. It forms part of STI's enrollment-to-employment system.

STI has a network of more than 100 campuses nationwide with academic programs in ICT, Business and Management, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Engineering and Healthcare.

Apart from the GSIS-STI educational assistance, the state-run pension fund offers free tertiary education every year through the GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP).

All GSIS active members with updated premium payments can join the program. Winning members, who will be drawn through a computer-assisted raffle, may nominate an incoming freshman or enrolled college student not necessarily related to them. Two-hundred slots are available this year.

Under the program, scholars enjoy tuition and miscellaneous fees of P20,000 per semester and a monthly stipend of P2,000. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)
