Doctor killed, 2 hurt as taxicab rams car

02/17/2011 - CEBU CITY, Philippines—A doctor died while two other sustained minor injuries in a vehicular accident early Wednesday morning at the Archbishop Reyes flyover in Barangay (village) Luz, Cebu City.

Dr. Alan Yu, 60 of #3 Yucca Road, Rosario Heights, Bacolod City, was declared dead on arrival at the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, traffic investigator P03 Wilfredo Caperida said.

Yu, who was driving his maroon Mitsubishi Adventure with plate number FFH 464, was coming from Barangay (village) Talamban area and was going towards uptown Cebu City when he was hit by a taxicab coming from the opposite direction at past 6 a.m.

Driver Polares Gonimil, 44, of Buhisan, with passenger Reshyl Timtim, 23, both sustained minor injuries.

Caperida confirmed that Gonimil, who was driving a taxi with the marking "RD-SAMC," was at fault since the vehicle he was driving had encroached on the opposite lane and had bumped the side of the front portion of Yu’s vehicle.

Caperida said Gonimil claimed that he accidentally swerved towards the opposite lane. However, Caperida believed that the taxi driver was running at high speed.

Caperida said they would file charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide with damage to properties against Gonimil who was brought to the traffic division office after he was treated for minor injuries at the Cebu City Medical Center. (Inquirer)
