Villarete has to master new field

10/21/2010 - MACTAN airport’s incoming general manager is more identified with infrastructure and bus lanes than airplanes.

Engr. Nigel Paul Villarete is the point man for Cebu City’s Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, a proposal that still has to roll out after lengthy study.

However, someone else will have to continue the novel scheme after Villarete shifts to a new career later this month.

Villarete applied for the post of airport general manager in 2001 and renewed his intention several times after that.

Last July 5, he submitted an updated information sheet after President Aquino assumed office.

“Although it will be a new office, it will still be the same government function. I will still be dealing with the same civil service laws and construction facilities,” said Villarete in an interview.

He cited his 21 years in government service.

Villlarete was chief of the infrastructure division of the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Region 7 and has been in government service since 1989.

He served as private sector representative of the Regional Development Council from 1995 to 2000.

He was also a consultant for the Cebu Provincial Reclamation Authority of then Cebu governor Pablo Garcia from 1998 to 2000 before joining Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s administration in the Cebu City government in 2001.

Villarete served as acting city administrator then was named planning and development officer.

As the new Mactan airport manager, Villarete will have a salary grade of 28 which ranges from P50,000 to P60,000 a month.

Villarete said the new job would mean having to get a feel of airport operations first, finding out what needs to be done, and consulting with other board members before introducing new policies or programs. (Cebu Daily News)
