TB cases Going up

SMOKING and drinking have led to an increase in tuberculosis cases in Cebu, the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) said yesterday.

Dr. Enrique Sancho, Communicable Disease Section Head for the Center for Health Development in Central Visayas, said smoking is prevalent among males in the lower economic class.

Most TB cases affect males aged 15 to 45 years old.

Sancho said children are more susceptible to TB now and should undergo tuberalic testing since lab results can't show if their lungs are affected.

Sancho said they recorded an 89 percent cure rate and 72 percent case detection for TB I the region or slightly higher than the 85 percent cure rate and 70 percent case detection in 2004-2006.

He said public and even some private hospitals are offering free medications for those diagnosed with TB.

Road damage

CONTINUOUS rains have slightly damaged the roads leading to the mountain barangay of Buot Taup, Talisay City.

Councilor Rosalita Callino said they asked the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) to send heavy equipment to repair the roads connecting sitios Pangpang and Laod in Buot Taup 1.

She said heavy rains seeped into the soil in the area resulting to cracks that have caused accidents among motorists and habal-habal (motorcycle-for-hire) drivers.

This hampered the delivery of vegetables to the markets in Tabunok and Carbon.

Callino said barangay officials and residents were filling in soil to compact their roads to make it temporarily passable. /Correspondent Edison delos Angeles
