2 more die in Cebu road accidents after fatal bus tragedy

07/05/2010 - CEBU CITY, Philippines – Reckless driving and defective brakes had caused the deaths of two more people in Cebu in separate road accidents on Sunday, a day after the fatal bus tragedy in Toledo City.

Eriberto Codilla of Candaguit, Sibonga, died in the hospital few hours after a multi-cab, carrying members of the Couples for Christ, lost its brakes and fell on its side at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in Sitio (Settlement of) Malacorong, Barangay (Village) Usmad, Argao town, 66.9 kilometers south of Cebu City.

Nine other members of the Couples for Christ, who came from a Bible Study in the mountain barangay of Linut-od, Argao, were injured.

Police Officer 2 Benjamin Gerosaga of Argao Police Station said Codilla’s head hit a rock and he died after he was brought for treatment to the Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital in Argao.

The driver, Zacarias Sabado, claimed that he was negotiating a downhill curve and when he applied the brakes, it failed causing the multi-cab to accelerate and to fall on its left side.

Sabado was still under custody at the Argao police station but the victims have not filed a complaint.

Meanwhile, a Cebu City-bound mini-bus collided with a motorcycle at 6:30 p.m. in Sitio Guiwanon, Barangay Poblacion, Compostela, 25 km north of Cebu City.

The driver of the motorcycle, Marvin Cabanes, in his 30s, from Cabadiangan, Compostela, died on the spot after he was thrown off from his motorcycle.

PO2 Fidelito Jopia of Compostela Police Station said the minibus driver, Francis Castro Loyola of Catmon town, was at fault.

Jopia said Loyola was overtaking a vehicle when he hit the motorcycle, which was coming from the opposite direction.

“It was a case of reckless and imprudent driving,” he said.

Loyola has been detained and will be charged for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

Also on Monday, the Toledo City police charged bus driver Diosdado Requiso for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and serious physical injuries for the deaths of 15 people and serious injuries to scores more for the bus accident in Toledo City days ago.

The case was filed with the Toledo city prosecutor’s office, which in turn, also filed the information before the Toledo Regional Trial Court.

Requiso was driving a VJ & A passenger bus along a road in Barangay Don Andres Soriano (DAS), Toledo City, when the vehicle lost its brakes in a downhill curve and rammed into a concrete fence, past 5 p.m. on Saturday, killing 15 people and injuring 65 passengers.

PO3 Julius Sanchez of the Toledo city police station said, the registered owner of the bus, Dulce Gantuangco, was also included in the civil case.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB 7) and Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 also suspended for a month the franchise on the buses owned by Gantuangco.

Gantuangco owned at least six buses. Her drivers were also required to undergo written tests and drug test.

The officials of the Land Transportation Office and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board were scheduled to meet Monday afternoon to discuss ways to ensure the safety of public utility vehicles, including buses. (Inquirer)
