4 killed, 8 hurt in another Cebu road accident

06/22/2010 - CEBU CITY, Philippines—Just eight days after the tragic bus accident in Balamban town, another vehicular accident occurred Monday afternoon in Toledo City, killing four persons and injuring eight others who were preparing for their annual fiesta.

Police Officer 3 Julius Sanchez, investigator of the Toledo City Police Station, identified the fatalities as Efren Sitoy, 24, of Naga City, Cebu; Ariel Roble, 19, of Compostela town; Orlando Sunngayan, 32, of Private Road, Cebu City; and Juliet Mainit, 35, of Pinamungahan town, Cebu. All four were killed on the spot.

The injured victims were Vilma Casas, 39, of Danao City; Laarni Hermoso, 26, and Eldy Hermoso, 26, reportedly couple from Awihaw, Danao City; Avita Castañares, 45, of Private, Cebu City; Adrian Sunggayan, 4, and Angie Sunggayan, 10, reportedly siblings from Private road, Cebu City; and truck helpers Pater Abadilla, 28, and Henry Castañares, 34, both from Cebu City, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said driver Joel Pepito, 31, was negotiating a downhill road in Toledo City around 5 p.m. when the brakes of his trailer truck, that was hauling two 20-footer container vans filled with empty plastic bags, malfunctioned and careened toward the Sacred Heart parish in Barangay Poog.

He said the two container vans fell and hit the crowd gathered outside the church preparing for the town fiesta on Tuesday.

The truck also hit three multi-purpose cabs parked along the road, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said the eight injured were brought to the Toledo District Hospital for treatment but Abadilla and Castañares were transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center because of serious injuries.

Toledo police detained Pepito, who faces a charge of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and physical injuries, he said.

The truck with plate number GXN 816 is owned by CNT Trucking. It came from Cebu City and was bound for Barangay Sangi in Toledo to deliver transparent plastic bags to Atlas Fertilizer.

On June 13, 20 Iranians and their Filipino driver were killed when their bus fell off the Transcentral Highway and plunged into a ravine in Balamban town on the west coast. Driver error and brake failure were initially blamed for the accident (Inquirer)
