05/20/10 - MASSIVE brownouts hit Metro Cebu yesterday due to inadequate power supply in the grid.
The Visayan Electric Company (Veco) imposed rotating brownouts yesterday - one hour in the morning and one and a half hours in the afternoon - to cope with the power shortage.
Ethel Natera, Veco corporate communications manager, said they were informed by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) that Veco’s share for the power shortage yesterday was 190 megawatts (MW).
Natera said they started the one-hour rotation brownout at 8:30 a.m., but at 12:30 p.m., they extended the duration to one and a half hours.
“Kay kung dili namo patas-an, mobalik ang brownout sa napagngan ganihang buntag,” Natera said yesterday.
As of 3 p.m., around 18 feeders of Veco were affected by the rotation brownout.
It affected most parts of Cebu, Talisay and Mandaue cities.
Natera said the 190MW deficiency as Veco’s share was the biggest compared to the previous days.
After the May 10 election, the rotation brownout was again implemented since Friday, except for last Saturday and Sunday because of lower demand during holidays.
Earlier, Department of Energy Visayas director Antonio Labios was quoted as saying that Visayas has a negative reserve due to the shutdown of the 84-megawatt power plant owned by Cebu Energy Development Corporation in Toledo City.
The plant has reportedly been undergoing maintenance since May 15. (CDN)
