CEBUANOS are set to rekindle their devotion to the Holy Child Jesus with the start of the nine-day novena Mass at the centuries-old Basilica del Sto. Niño on Thursday.
This year’s religious festivities will revolve around the theme “Faithfulness of Señor Sto. Niño, Faithfulness of the devotees.”
The first Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Rodolfo Bugna OSA, the Basilica rector who will also lead the installation rites of the Hermano and Hermana Mayores at the Pilgrim Center.
The traditional Misa de Traslacion will be held on Jan. 15, followed by a motorcade that will bring the image of the Sto. Niño from the Basilica del Sto. Niño to the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City.
The dawn fluvial procession the next day, Jan. 16, will start from the Ouano Wharf in Mandaue to the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge in Lapu-Lapu City. The procession will end in Pier 1 in Cebu City, which is also the site of the re-enactment of the arrival of the image on the island.
The re-enactment of the First Mass and Baptism will be held around mid-morning at the Basilica while the solemn procession of the miraculous image will commence in the afternoon.
The procession starts from the Basilica, turns right to P. Burgos and proceed to Plaza Sugbu then Magallanes Street to Borromeo Street, Leon Kilat Street and to J. Alcantara street.
The image will be brought through V. Rama Avenue, B. Rodriguez Street and to Fuente Osmeña and Osmeña boulevard and back to the church.
The root of the celebration stems from the arrival of an image of the Sto. Niño to Cebu in the late 1500s. Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan gave the image to Hara Amihan, the wife of Rajah Humabon, who was later given the name Queen Juana.
Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal is expected to say the second Fiesta Mass on Jan. 17 at the Basilica.
