Longer Sinulog route mulled for next year

1/19/10 - CEBU City officials proposed to extend the parade route in order to ensure convenience for both contingents and spectators next year.
Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Sinulog Foundation Inc. Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros also rejected the idea to transfer the Sinulog venue from the Cebu City Sports Center to the South Road Properties (SRP).
“There is no such thing as holding a bigger venue. This (Cebu City Sports Center) holds 20,000 people, finding a bigger venue is a wrong priority. But probably we will expand the parade route,” Osmeña said.
Ballesteros said that if the SRP is fully developed, then they may consider holding the Sinulog there.
He said the road there is wide and long, reaching up to 10 kilometers compared to the Osmeña Boulevard which is quite narrow.
Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador, Cebu City police chief, said he would recommend the opening of the skywalk at Gen. Maxilom Avenue near a department store to reduce crowd congestion.
He said police officers and guards will be stationed to prevent people from staying at the skywalk.
Both Comendador and Ballesteros thanked the volunteers and other groups for contributing to the success of the Sinulog festival.
Osmeña also recommended moving the Ms Cebu pageant during the city's Charter Day on Feb. 28 and replacing it with the Festival Queen which is more appropriate for the Sinulog.
“We will make it a national event. The Festival Queen is a stronger following of the parade itself. We will ask the contestants to project their own place and we are guilty of not doing much of it,” Osmeña said.
Cebu City Education Consultant Joy Augustus Young also said he will ask the mayor to include the rehabilitation of the CCSC's rubberized track oval in the city government's budget.
Meanwhile, the Tribu Hinag-ulaw contingent from Placer, Masbate and the Tangub City group led the winners in receiving their awards in this year's Sinulog Grand Parade in ceremonies held at the jam-packed Cebu City Sports Center yesterday afternoon.
The contingent bagged the festival's Free Interpretation (FI) category followed by Lumad Basakanon, second; Pintaflores of San Carlos City, third; Lanao del Norte, fourth; and Mabolo Elementary School, fifth.
Basakanon also placed second in the street dancing category and won the best in musicality division.
Pintaflores won the best in costume while Lanao del Norte ranked third in the street dancing competition.
Tangub City bagged the Sinulog Based (SB) Category and was also first place in the street dancing category.
Abellana National School ranked second in the Sinulog category followed by Carcar City at third, barangay Lahug in Cebu City at fourth and Don Sergio Osmena Sr. Memorial National at fifth place.
Plaques of recognition were given to incorporators of the Sinulog Foundation, Inc. and the participating schools like Southwestern University;
University of San Carlos, University of Cebu, Cebu Technological University (formerly CSAT), University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of the Visayas and University of Southern Philippines.
Contingents who have won three or more awards in the Sinulog parade like the San Diego Dance Company, Southwestern University, Lumad Basakanon and the Tribu Sinanduloy of Tangub City were also cited.
Also receiving plaques were the winning choreographers who produced three or more three grand prizes for Sinulog's 30 years as well as the pillars of the Sinulog festival
