Z Gorres’ health improves, gives nurse a thumbs up

FINALLY a thumb’s up from Z Gorres. ALA gym star Gorres has continued his recovery and has shown remarkable improvement after an emergency brain surgery last Friday.

In an interview with radio dyLA, Aldeguer said the oxygen tube installed in the boxer might be removed anytime soon and the doctors at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas will let Gorres breathe on his own.

“He’s very stable and maayo kaayo ang progress,” Aldeguer said in the interview.
The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) sneaked in a last minute item during its regular session yesterday because of its urgency—a resolution on Gorres.

The PB wanted to extend financial aid to the boxer known as “The Dream” for his medical treatment.

Gorres grew up in Mandaue City. PB Member Victor Maambong, who represents the sixth district where Mandaue belongs, sponsored the resolution.

“The sterling professional career of ZC Oliveros Gorres—a humble professional boxer, Filipino pride and a native Cebuano—gives him an international recognition as one of the excellent professional boxers in the world,” the PB resolution read.

“His family is totally dependent on him for support, thus they are having difficulty footing the mounting hospital bills.”

Gorres was under a 48-hour monitoring after his emergency brain surgery last Friday. He was on a medically induced coma for the surgery, which was to help contain the swelling in his brain.
Gorres collapsed after he was announced the winner of his 10-round bout against Luis Melendez, which was to serve as a preparation for a Feb. 13 title bout.

“The plan for tomorrow is to decrease sedation and allow him to be more conscious. They will start weaning him from the ventilator to allow him to breathe on his own,” Aldeguer said in his text message. “Please continue to pray for him.”

In another interview with abs-cbnnews.com, Aldeguer said Gorres gave a thumb’s up when he was asked by the nurse.

Gorres is scheduled to face Fernando Montiel in a rematch for the World Boxing Organization bantamweight title on Feb. 13, Michael Aldeguer, the son of Tony, said that isn’t their concern right now.

“Boxing is far from our mind. What we’re looking for is for him to survive this,” Michael said in an interview with ANC.

Duchess Gorres, also told abs-cbnnews.com, that if it was up to her, she wants her husband to retire from boxing, a move the senior Aldeguer agrees with.

“Boxing is out of the question. It’s very difficult for him to go back and I will not allow him to go back,” Aldeguer told abs-cbnnews.com.

In an interview after the PB session, Maambong admitted that the PB could not specify an amount because it is up to Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez.
Maambong hopes that the financial aid will be taken from the discretionary fund of either the governor or vice governor.

PB Members Wenceslao Gakit who also represents the sixth district co-sponsored the resolution with Sanchez and PB Member Alfred Francis Ouano.

Maambong hopes that the aide could be released within three to four days.
Copies of the resolution were to be given to Gorres’s family and Mandaue City
