Friday, October 2, 2009 CEBU CITY – An estimated P300,000 in properties were destroyed in a fire in the interior portion of Archbishop Reyes Ave. in Barangay Luz, Cebu City past 10 a.m. Thursday.
A man was reported to have suffered minor burns and was treated at the Barangay Hall by responding paramedics.
One of the four houses damaged by the fire belongs to retired policeman Ricardo Cortes. The blaze gutted the second floor of his house.
The fire took place at the back of the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-ibig building at the Cebu Business Park. Only a concrete fence separated the building from the flames.
The Cebu City Fire Department received the call for assistance at 10:45 a.m.
Because the area is highly-populated, the status of the fire was immediately raised to a second alarm.
Firefighters, including those from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation and Filipino-Chinese Fire Brigade, contained the flames and declared the fire under control at 11:17 a.m.
Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also responded to the alarm to assess what kind of help the displaced families need.
According to the initial investigation by Senior Fire Officer 2 Roylen Maratas, the fire started in a house occupied mostly by boarders.
Maratas, however, said further investigation still needs to be done to determine what caused the blaze. (JTG of Sun.Star Cebu)
