August 24, 2009 Cebu City – Tourism officials expect to see the tourism industry in Central Visayas, particularly Cebu’s, given added boost soon, with the visit of Skal International Association of Travel and Tourism Professional President Hulya Aslantas to Manila and Cebu City next month.
Aslantas’ agenda is mainly to meet with Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and local tourism stakeholders for possible collaborative projects within the sector.
Elected head of the global tourism organization during the 69th Skal World Congress in Taipei last year, Aslantas will be in the Philippines September 3 – 7.
Tourism stakeholders in Cebu will have a chance to meet and discuss tourism programs and projects in the province with her when she visits Cebu on September 6.
Skål is the only international professional association bringing together all sectors of the travel and tourism industries, that is, hotels, airlines, travel media, shipping, theme parks, car rentals, hospitality academe and national tourism offices. Formed in 1934, it is considered to be the world’s biggest association of tourism and travel in 90 countries and almost 500 locations in the world.
The world tourism organization is also an affiliate member of the World Tourism Organization Business Council, whose mission, among others, is to promote ethics in business as embodied in the issued by the World Tourism Organization’s Global Code of Ethics, covering peace, the environment, security, pollution, human contacts and respect for local cultures.
Before her current post, Aslantas was Vice President of Skal International and Managing Director of Turkey-based Universal Travel Services.
In an earlier interview, Aslantas stressed her belief that “Skal and all the Skal members have a duty to ensure the sustainability of tourism. Being from so many different companies, yet speaking the same language of tourism, we can create this cultural exchange between various people from different parts of the world so we can start knowing each other.”
Dawnie Roa, Regional Director of the Department of Tourism in Central Visayas, also expressed optimism that Aslanta’s visit to Cebu will jumpstart additional joint projects between Skal-Cebu and Skal International, which would consequently have positive impacts on Cebu’s tourism industry as a whole.
