Cebu media were urged by the Catholic Church to instill Christian values while government called on the mass media to promote dialogue for better understanding during last night’s 14th Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards (CAMMA) at the Cebu Grand Convention Center.
In his speech, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal called on the local media to “regulate themselves for the common good” amid the advances in technology which he said “had made the world smaller.”
“The church cannot ignore technology. New models of communication have made the world smaller. But these advances do not always yield good results,” he said citing intrusion in privacy, a “culture of voyeurism” and groups that manipulate public opinion using media to create a bandwagon effect.
Vidal cited the words of Pope Benedict XVI who observed that through new media and technology “we have become neighbors but we are not yet brothers andsisters.”
It’s the hope of CAMMA to uphold the standards of the profession,” said Vidal.
He expressed appreciation for stories aired and published in Cebu media, which he said promoted Christian values.
Later in a speech, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde called on media to help promote “dialogue” rather than stir up controversy in order to build understanding and friendship.
“Is the new technology in media geared to promote dialogue and a culture of respect or is trying to destroy the truth?,” he said.
Remonde talked about his experience being misquoted or misunderstood by national dailies which caused him fitful nights worrying about what kind of headlines would come out the next day.
“Nakarma na tingali ko kay nagpataka man sad ko sa una. (This must be karma because I was careless too before),” said Remonde, a former radio commentator and manager of radio dyLA.
Remonde said his admission of mistakes media has made are his reflections of what the awards is all about.
The Press Secretary assisted Vidal in handing out trophies and certificates of recognition to the winners in print, broadcast and online media.
